When it comes to Japanese sweets, it's difficult to taste ones that aren't satisfactory. Unless we're talking about anko (sweet red bean paste), which I still haven't gotten quite used to. But during my first couple of days roaming the streets towards Akihabara, I bumped into a small pastry shop that continues to be my favorite Japanese sweet in Tokyo.

At the time, I didn't know what it was, so I researched and found out that it was karinto (a deep-fried Japanese sweet made from flour and sugar). But not exactly, as it had filling inside. I then found manju (steamed bun filled with anko). But it still wasn't right, since the sweet was never steamed.

Thus, I discovered when I fused the two together and put "karinto manju" on the search, that the sweet actually appeared. Which makes it a deep-fried Japanese sweet, filled with anko (or any other filling) -- which is exactly what I had!

Anyways, enough talking about. I'll just show you the sweet and how to get there:

 

Here are two tips to bear in mind:

1. If you happen to be in Tokyo during September, October, or early November, you may be able to try the kabocha (pumpkin) karinto manju, if they still offer it. This is by far my favorite filling and I haven't had it since 2014. Yes, it hurts.

2. Don't make the mistake I made: The night I headed out to Kyoto, I purchased 6 kabocha karinto manjus. A couple of hours later, I had one and it tasted soggy, a bit oily, it lost its crunch and wasn't the same. This is the type of sweet that's enjoyed the moment you receive it. Remember that.
