Get your idols-and-murder fix with AKB48's Hulu horror show

But where do the toilet syringes go?

If your life has been lacking in sugar sweet pop idols, as well as chilling doses of horror and/or murder, a recent announcement by Hulu might be the one magic bullet to take down both your problems.

Indeed, the streaming service has pulled the veil off a new, six-part miniseries called Crow's Blood, which will star AKB48 luminary Mayu Watanabe and her comrade in Fukuoka-based HKT48, Sakura Miyawaki. The story of Crow's Blood is reportedly penned by none other than Yasushi Akimoto, the mastermind behind AKB48 itself, as well as a number of other idol outfits. The show will have Darren Lynn Bousman, the director of the Saw series, as executive producer.

As for what it's actually about, "schoolgirls in trouble" is a pretty good three-word summary based on the details available. Miyawaki will play Maki Togawa, a mysterious and aloof transfer student who joins the school of mild-mannered Kaori Isozaki. As might be imagined, strange happenings occur to upset their lives. Given the show's Saw pedigree, I can't help but wonder if at some point someone will be forced to put their hand in a gross pile of toilet syringes or cut open their eyebrow to gain their freedom from some kind of horrific deathtrap.

So far, so J-Horror. Hulu hasn't announced plans to stream the show outside Japan, but I imagine it shouldn't be too big a leap for them to do so. I hear Netflix's own "native" Japanese productions are doing alright, so Crow's Blood could pull in numbers from the overseas dorama-loving fans.
