Ghost in the Shell's first full trailer is looking pretty 'Major'

Plus some slick bodysuit action

It's hard to believe that after spending the better part of the last decade in development and then months after that mired in controversy, that the Ghost in the Shell film is now a thing that will actually happen in a few months' time. But it is, and we've got the first full trailer to prove it.

Looking at the trailer brings up a number of notable references to scenes from the original film, including an iconic dive off a skyscraper, lead actress Scarlett Johanssen in a nude-esque thermoptic camouflage bodysuit, geisha robots abducting hapless mooks, and more. Concerning are some differences including the fact that Johanssen's character appears to simply be called "Major", and not "The Major". Is it her name and not a reference to her rank like in the other versions of the series? There's also the implication that "Major" is the "first of [her] kind", implying that cyberization isn't as far along in the world of the film as in other Ghost in the Shell "timelines". What this means overall remains to be seen when the film opens next March.

Interviews with producer Avi Arad indicate that the film's plot appears to be taking inspiration from Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex 2nd GIG series, particularly ones involving the character Kuze. That sounds more interesting to me than a straight adaptation of Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film, and the film appears to be proceeding into its own take on the material. While that might not necessarily satisfy the hardcore purists, it's a move that keeps in the Ghost in the Shell tradition of having a diverse approach to adaptation. I wrote about that in my primer for the franchise.

Check out the trailer below, followed by a featurette featuring some more footage, behind the scenes action, and even Mamoru Oshii himself.
