Give your Valentine chocolate FF7 Materia

Taste the planet

As a card-carrying chocoholic (and that's chocoholic for "chocolate" and not "chocobo," although the latter kind of works too), I have a bit of a dilemma with artisanal sweets. I love it when candies look awesome, but when they look TOO awesome, then I just kind of want to look at them and not eat them. The above Final Fantasy VII-inspired chocolate set, available for Valentine's Day at Artnia, the Square Enix store in Tokyo, does such a good job of capturing the appeal of my favorite magical orbs that I doubt I'd ever besmirch them by putting them in my filthy, filthy mouth.

Of course, these premium chocolates come at the premium price of  ¥3,000, just under $29 US, but what do you expect? It's your very own set of materia, including Aeris' special White materia. Doesn't just looking at it fill you with visions of the Lifestream surging forth to heal the planet? Besides, isn't it fun to imagine what flavors each class of materia might be? I'm guessing that the White Materia is vanilla, red is cherry, and yellow is fiery jalapeno because E. Skill should be represented by something hot and spicy. Now, what flavor would Chocobo Lure be? *scratches head*

There are also two other, cheaper sets available based on Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, but not only do I hate Advent Children, the chocolate seems pretty darn ordinary. Unlike the materia set, they're just plain square chocolates with logos and some line art stamped on them...meh. Look, if you're going to buy FF7 chocolate at all, get the materia: you know it's the right thing to do. Meanwhile, since I won't be in Tokyo to pick these up any time soon, I'll amuse myself by trying to imagine what flavor every single kind of materia from the game should be: I'm feeling coconut for Bahamut ZERO and saltwater taffy for Underwater. Please feel free to share any flavor suggestions in the comments; I feel a cooking project coming on.
