Gundam 35th anniversary brings new movie, OVA, TV show

Tons of robots coming down the pipe

I hope you're ready for a whole lot of Gundam in the next couple months, because the air is about to get thick with Minovsky Particles. To commemorate the 35th year of Gundam, Sunrise is prepping an onslaught of media for fans of the long-running real-robot franchise. First, the seventh and final episode of the Gundam Unicorn OVA will be hitting Japanese theaters May 17th.

Not merely satisfied with completing the popular OVA series set late in the Universal Century timeline, Sunrise also announced the next proper Gundam series. Following the whimsical Gundam: Build Fighters is Gundam: Reconguista in G, headed by none other than Yoshiyuki Tomino, i.e. the original creator of Mobile Suit Gundam. Set in the post-UC Reguild Era, the story will be about a young pilot named Beruri Zenamu and his adventures in protecting space elevators. Expect to see it hit TV screens this Fall.

Finally, we finally got a trailer for the first Gundam: The Origin project. Called Blue Eyed Casval, it will be about the life of Casval Rem Daikun and Artesia Som Daikun prior to the start of the One-Year War. You may recognize those names as the true identities of Char Aznable and Sayla Mass. Gundam: The Origin I: Blue Eyed Casval is set for release next spring.

I'm pleased that The Origin project is finally moving forward. For a while there I was worried that it had stalled and we'd never see anything about it. Based off that clip, I'm excited to see more, though it's going to be quite a wait before we see anything over on this side of the world. As for the Reconguista in G, I'm glad that we finally know that it was the secret-ish project that Tomino has been working on. While his most recent work has been spotty, you can't ignore how great his career has been as a whole. Tomino is a master at getting you comfortable and happy with a group of charcters, then swerving hard and killing most of them in sad and horrible ways. Considering how happy Beruri looks in the trailer, I'm expecting him to suffer tremendously. Thus is the way of the Bald Wizard. You can see some brief snippets of all three projects post-jump.
