Gunslinger Girl season 2 to air in early January

The announcement of the second season of Gunslinger Girl, entitled Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino-, has been around for a while. What's new here, though, is a bit of news that Moetron picked up:

The “Dengeki 15th Anniversary” event that was held on the 24th last Saturday announced that the new Gunslinger Girl series, “GUNSLINGER GIRL -IL TEATRINO-,” would begin as early as Monday, January 7th 2008 on both TOKYO MX and TV Osaka (27:00).

Originally, this show was expected to start running sometime between March and June from what I had read (more in the March area), and so to see it pushed up as far as the Winter season makes me explode with glee. The Gunslinger Girl series is one that has been near and dear to my heart -- fans of the film Leon: The Professional need to see this series if they haven't already. It's on sale for a discounted price from FUNimation, with the first 13 episodes on shelves in a box set for about $40.

For those of you already familiar with the series, -Il Teatrino- is supposed to go up through the end of the Pinnochio arc, which is about what we've got here in the U.S. right now. The Japanese manga goes up to volume 9, introducing some new characters (Russians, I believe). ADV's been notoriously slow with the volumes, only recently releasing volumes 4 and 5 after a two year hiatus. The audience for the show will likely determine if Yu Aida's still-ongoing series will see a possibly third season.

Needless to say, I call "dibs" for this show. No matter what it is, I call dibs.
