Hana Doki Kira Kickstarter showcases shoujo

Kickstart the sparkly-sparkly

There's a lot of projects on Kickstarter with some link to anime or manga these days, and while we can't keep tabs on all of them, we try to let you know about anything particularly interesting that pops up. One of the latest is Hana Doki Kira, an anthology featuring the illustrations and manga of 26 different artists, all of whom were inspired by shoujo manga specifically.

The Year 85 Group--the group of six artists who are taking the reins here-- would like to secure the funding for a limited run of physical books, as well as compensate the artists for their time. They're also looking to give away some free copies to libraries, girls clubs and anime clubs, so that's nice to hear. Project backers can net a PDF of the book, postcards, posters, and even original sketches from the artists. As of this writing, Hana Doki Kira is up to $6,800 of its $9,500 goal, so chances of the collection being published are looking pretty good-- that said, if you want to make sure this becomes a reality, you have until Sunday, Nov. 30 to back the project.

The Kickstarter page helpfully provides links to the work of every artist who's participating, which is interesting. After a casual glance, I liked some of the artists' styles and other's not-so-much, which is a limitation of the project-- since it's an anthology, you can't be quite sure what you're going to get. That said, if you take the time to check out the artists' work and find at least a few that you connect with, Hana Doki Kira may be worth your time.

One caveat: they keep saying on the project page that the book's artwork will be black, white and "sea-foam green." Is it just me, or does their version of sea-foam green actually look more like blue? Like, periwinkle or something? Maybe my Crayola crayons lied to me all those years ago....
