Hello Kitty goes moe at Comiket

Hello Kitty is popular the world over (my sisters and I were frequent visitors to the Sanrio store that used to be at the local mall), but now, Sanrio seems to be making a push to introduce the brand to a new audience with plenty of money to spend &mdash otaku.

Sanrio has started a new project titled "Together With Hello Kitty" to target moe otaku, collaborating with popular artists such as okama, POP (Moetan), and Kuroboshi Kouhaku (Kino's Journey) &mdash not to make a human personification of Hello Kitty, but to design super cute girls who love Hello Kitty like the girl above designed by okama who wants to become a "Platinum Kitty" in a short story on her character profile. Sanrio will have a booth at this summer's Comic Market (Comiket for short) with plenty of goods on sale featuring the "Together with Hello Kitty" characters such as tote bags, T-shirts, and cell phone screen cleaners.

I'm not too surprised with this, as Sanrio's Onegai My Melody anime was already popular among ooki na otomodachi (otaku who watch shows mainly targeted at a younger audience) thanks to the uncontrolled chaos (My Melody's image in the anime was rather scary... poor Kuromi) and cute characters, and I'd expect that segment of otaku to be at Comiket to buy the goods. Of course, given the audience, it wouldn't be surprising at all to see some doujinshi featuring these characters at the winter Comiket...
