Here now is your first real look at Persona 5

Lookin' good, Protagonist!

I mean...wow.

I've said more than once that Atlus was going to have to work very hard to top Persona 4 Golden, which is perhaps the most reified possible iteration of the design formula Persona 3 pioneered. I don't know yet if what they've got in store for PS3s and PS4s this year can truly exceed that, and I frankly have my doubts that they will. But I can say this: They've the look down. I didn't think they'd actually get something as striking as Persona 4's yellow-and-black schema, but they did.

There's also actual gameplay in there, too, and it looks quite a bit like Catherine. Characters are moving and interacting in fully detailed 3D models rather than having the 2D cutouts of yestergame, and the dungeon environments look to include traversal and even stealth elements.

A few story details have also gotten out via promotions surrounding Atlus' epic livestream: The Protagonist appears to have a secret identity as "The Phantom", some kind of masked hero (or villain), and combat shows off him and three other characters all wearing masks, which alongside a vague prison theme seem to be major motifs for the game. Come to think of it, they all look like cast members in a Lupin or Detective Conan spinoff. In a letter addressed to fans on the game's website, director Katsura Hashino referred to the team wanting to make something similar to "Picaresque Romance", and the characters being "pursued" by mysterious happenings due to their personal sense of justice, and being "less behaved" than what fans might be used to.

And of course, there's cross-promotion. Copies of Persona 4: Dancing All Night will include a special Blu-ray with more footage from Persona 5 on it.
