Here's your first trailer for Gundam AGE, the new Gundam

0

It's been a while since we got ourselves brand new entry into the Gundam franchise, that eternal font of plastic models, toys and fanboys whining about a return to the Universal Century, but now Bandai and Sunrise are obliging.

Now, they're still not returning to the Universal Century (grumpy old folks can always watch Gundam Unicorn), but they are going to call it Gundam AGE, and this time they're handling the story reins to, of all people, Level-5, the powerhouse game developer behind the Professor Layton games. If that sounds odd to you, note that they're also behind the Layton movies, as well as the Danball Senki TV series (as well as its source game).

Oh, and they're also developing an RPG based on (you guessed it) Gundam AGE.

Speaking of Danball Senki, Gundam AGE looks more than a little similar, at least in terms of visuals, perhaps skewing a few years older in terms of target demographic. The character designs skew more Pocket Monster than War in the Pocket, but the story is quite interesting. Rather than the common Space-versus-Earth scenario, AGE follows the Gundam AGE-1 itself as it's piloted by (and evolves with) three different protagonists over the course of the "One Hundred Year War" against the UE (for "Unknown Enemy").

Mechanical designs will be coming from folks who, collectively, have worked almost exclusively on Gundam properties with non-name alphanumeric characters for suffixes, including Gundams V, W, X, ∀, and 00, as well as Macross F and Code Geass R2. The series airs in October.

I'm definitely interested in this one, as its premise feels like such a departure from the old Gundam tropes. In a way, it feels as fresh in terms of scenario as ∀ Gundam did way back when.
