Here, ten minutes of the new Dragon Quest MMO

It's not called Dragon Quest Online or Dragon Quest MMO. It's actually called Dragon Quest X, making it a numbered, core franchise release. And yet, everything I've heard and read about it to date, suggests that it's an MMO, complete with subscription fee and massively multiplayer structure. Kind of like Final Fantasy XI and XIV in that respect, I guess.

And yet, the Wii's last huge hurrah in Japan may have more influence than either of the other games. Dragon Quest is much more of an institution there, after all, attracting casuals and core, old and young. Maybe it'll drag Glorious Nippon into the wider online age. And Dragon Quest has made some bold moves in recent years, with DQIX initially decried for its presence on the Nintendo DS and differing in structure from pretty much everything before.

We'll have to see how this turns out. Ideally in a localized form, sans subscription fee. Capcom were smart enough to waive that bit of extortion for overseas releases of Monster Hunter Tri, so hopefully Square Enix will follow that path.
