IMDB's list of top anime reads like 'Ask an American'

But of course it would be, I guess?

There's nothing like a big ol' debate about what counts as "the best", and even anime - perhaps especially anime - are no stranger to this particular type of nerd catnip. Everyone's got their own little "toplist", including the famed IMDB. And, as it turns out, Japanese anime take up a not-insignificant part of the site's Top 250 TV Series of All Time. No less than 28 anime series are on the list, an impressive feat for a medium that's usually defined by a normally very insular, Japan-centric outlook.

But then again, looking over the list reads very much like the sort of toplist that overseas fans would come up with, a "greatest hits" set that foreigners, particularly Americans who grew up in the '90s, would choose. Entries that are wildly popular among English-speaking fans, like Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, and Fullmetal Alchemist, lead the pack, with few more recent offerings like Attack on Titan and Steins;Gate making the cut. And there's also an absence of older series that weren't aired in North America, but still hugely influential to anime as a whole, like Macross, Space Battleship Yamato, and Astro Boy.

I suppose that's to be expected. IMDB is mainly an American site, and the English-speaking internet is often dominated by users that hold American cultural mores. I'm not necessarily debating the list's legitimacy, and honestly, I'd be inclined to agree with many of the choices (though reserving four spots for two versions of Dragon Ball feels excessive). It's just that it's interesting to see reminders that despite the perceived global nature of the internet, it's still easy to perceive very local cultural mores. Then again, in the words of Motoko Kusanagi, the net is vast and infinite, so there's always a place you can find a list you'd consider more agreeable.

Check out the full list below and tell us what you'd include on your "Best of"!
