Impressions: Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction

Being a fan of Inio Asano’s work, such as Oyasumi Punpun, What a Wonderful World, Umibe no Onna no Ko among others, I have had Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction on my “plan to read” for a long time but never really push myself into reading it, especially with other series having more priority at the time. Thankfully Viz Media released the first volume of the series, so I was finally able to check it out. The first volume so far was entertaining, and I would like to read more as more volumes come out, however, I feel like it’s very slow as well.

The story revolves an alien invasion which occurred in Tokyo three years ago, but ever since, nothing was the same again. The Japan Self-Defense Forces are still looking for a way to combat the alien threat, but so far conventional weapons have had no effect. Maybe it’s time to try something unconventional. Meanwhile, Kadode Koyama, the protagonist of the series, and her best friend avidly track the aliens’ movements on social media and less enthusiastically study for college entrance exams. When the end of the world looms overhead, you learn to take things one step at a time.

For me, the character interactions, especially under these circumstances was what made it the most entertaining. I just found it intriguing that the characters are so used to their surroundings that even impending doom just feels ordinary to them. However, I give it just that. The story really feels slow and too much of slice of life. I’m used to Asano’s work, but I still wish this was a little bit faster. But I guess it does fit its description of impending doom becoming ordinary.

It’s hard to recommend it to anyone that isn’t a fan of Inio Asano or just Oyasumi Punpun like some of my friends. The characters are entertaining, but it’s not exactly a comedy like Nichijou or City. It’s really hard to judge the series by just one volume but so far, it has potential.
