Impressions: Gabriel Dropout Manga Vol. 1

Straight Outta Heaven

Looking back, 2017 had a decent start with it’s anime lineup, including Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, Konosuba Season 2, and Gabriel Dropout, which were among my favorite during the first quarter of the year. Many months later, courtesy of Yen Press, we got the first volume of Gabriel Dropout. Being a huge fan of the anime, I thought I was going to enjoy the manga as well.

For those not familiar with Gabriel Dropout, the series is about an angel named Gabriel who after graduating at the top of her class from Angel Academy, she has descended to bring joy to the people of earth, however things didn’t go as planned. Upon learning about the wonders of human entertainment, she gives in to her latent desires. She skips school to play games in her room and now she’s getting scolded by her devil friend Vignette.

Each chapter is episodic and doesn’t connect with the previous chapter for the most part. The relationship between Gabriel and Vignette can be quite entertaining, especially since she’s the opposite of Gabriel, she is very responsible and often has to look after Gabriel, who lives in the same building as her, contrary to her actual role as a demon.

My favorite chapter in this volume has to be Chapter 5, where Santaya, another demon in the series who often thinks of petty ways to cause mischief which usually end in failure, Vignette, and Gabriel try to cook. There wasn’t anything too spectacular about it, but as someone who enjoys cooking, I found it the most enjoyable.

If you enjoyed Gabriel Dropout when it aired last year, I recommend picking this up. If you’re looking for a light read with not much information to absorb, then it’s nice as well. I really enjoyed the anime and wanted to read the source material, and I did not regret it.  It’s not for those who expect a story-heavy series.
