Impressions: Gun Gale Online Manga Vol. 1

Welcome to GGO!

Most of us can agree that Sword Art Online isn’t the best series out there, especially with protagonists like Kirito and Asuna, but it’s spin-off series, Gun Gale Online, is enjoyable. Personally, I like the main character, Karen, a lot more. She isn’t really edgy like Kirito, which can be quite annoying, and the series isn’t a harem either.

Gun Gale Online is about a girl named Karen Kohiruimaki who has always felt out of place in the real world. Due to her extreme height, she’s found it hard to make friends with other girls, but thanks to VR and Gun Gale Online, a VRMMORPG, she was free to play the cute chibi avatar of her dreams.

The volume starts with Karen’s character, Llenn and Pito-san fighting a bunch of soldiers and showing off how agile Llenn is, and her relationship with Pito-san. Then we see Karen in real life and the struggles she faces because of her height, that being the reason she got into MMOs – for the chance to be the small girl she always wanted to be.

As a gamer myself, although I’m not fully fond of First Person Shooters, I’m really enjoying it so far. Nothing too major is going on at the first volume but I can really appreciate the different approach to the series so far. I’m liking the characters so far as well, and I'm really intrigued to learn more about Pito-san, whom we don’t know much about yet. The adaptation of the Battle Royale genre, known as Squad Jam in the series has been interesting so far, especially since it’s just Karen and “M”, an acquaintance of Pito, battling by themselves.

If you want to read a video game related series but isn’t exactly the usual fantasy as shown in many series, then I would definitely recommend picking up Gun Gale Online. I really enjoyed the take on First Person Shooter, especially since I’ve been playing a little bit of both PUGB and Fortnite lately.
