Impressions: Kaguya-sama Love is War

Who will confess first?

After re-reading My Hero Academia and Tokyo Ghoul, preparing for their upcoming (or current anime seasons depending on when this is published), I thought I needed to read something different, so I looked into the recently released first volume of Kaguya-sama Love is War. After reading the synopsis, it immediately caught my attention.

The story revolves Kaguya and Miyuki who are the leaders of their prestigious academy’s student council – the elite of the elite in other words. However, both Kaguya and Miyuki have fallen in love, but their pride impedes them from admitting their feelings to each other, so instead, they start a daily scheming to get the object of their affection to confess their romantic feelings first.

The story far from being your typical love Shonen, with main male character surrounded with girls, such as ClannadToradora, and Nisekoi, most of the story is centralized in the love affair between Kaguya and Miyuki. The series does have its side characters like Chika, their council secretary, and while her presence does add to the story and makes it more entertaining, she’s just there to make the love affair more difficult, unintentionally, of course.

Each chapter is episodic and keeps count of who won each confrontation, with some having inconclusive endings due to snags, or a tie. However, even though each chapter is episodic, they do reference one another, so the character development has more weight, too. Additionally, I felt like the series hit home to an extent since some of their situations were relatable to my high school years.

If you’re looking into picking up a Shonen romance, then I would definitely recommend Kaguya-sama Love is War. The main characters are very likable, the story can be relatable, and the comedy and character interactions feel natural, too.
