Indie music film Live From Tokyo premiers tonight in NY

Sure, many of us here are already well aware of the big names in Japanese music, like Utada Hikaru, Ayumi Hamasaki, Perfume and the like. That's the j-pop stuff, mainstream in the extreme.

Of course there's also the other side of the spectrum, the indie underground seen and heard only in the seediest, darkest, dirtiest corners of Japan's mega-cities. While you might have heard a bit of this here on Japanator, there's often only so much we can do to bring you to the cutting edge.

Enter Live From Tokyo, a new indie documentary film that goes into the clubs and back alleys and shows the scene like it really is, warts and all. The film is screening TONIGHT in New York city in the Asia Society Museum at 6:45pm. It features performances and interviews by Shugo Tokumaru, d.v.d, Nisennenmondai, Tenniscoats, PARA (ex-Boredoms), Sexy-Synthesizer, D.M.B.Q, Sajjanu, KIRIHITO , Optrum, Samm Bennett, W. David Marx, Tokyo Pinsalocks and many many more. The event is being presented by New York-Tokyo as part of the Yoshitomo Nara: Nobody's Fool exhibition event program. It's a must-see for any true J-music fan.

If you can't make it to the premiere, you can expect to see a full review here on Japanator soon. But if you can make it, make it! (Trailer after the jump.)
