Japan's Cat Island gets lots of love to fight food shortage

A Purr-ty big response!

Aoshima is a small island in a remote part of the Ehime prefecture of Japan. It's the kind of small island you mind find a martial arts master residing, or the kind of place you'd take a high school class for a trip (don't forget the commemorative metal collars!). The whole island is only about 8 miles around and is occupied by about 16 people-

-and oh yeah...

...about 140 cats!

Known as "Cat Island", the small island at one time housed many thousands of people, but when businesses closed and people moved away, it dwindled down to less than 24 permanent residents. The cats come into the picture as they were brought to the island to control the mice that would stowaway on incoming ships. As the human population dwindled, the cat population grew. There is just one problem.

They ran out of food.

While the cats themselves are feral, they gotta eat too and those on the island aren't going to let the little Nekochans starve. When the human's cat food started running dry, and probably preventing the cats from going after each other or the humans, An island resident named Naoko Kamimoto, a member of the Aoshima cat Protection Society, went to Twitter with her plea to send cat food to help keep the island's furbabies from starving.

The message was received loud and clear.

So much cat food was sent that it overflowed the storage room and boxes had to be stored in the waiting room of the society. Naoko reports that they have enough food to last until the end of March so people can hold off for a bit.

No word if any of those boxes are shipments of Senzu beans.
