Japanator Interviews: SCANDAL

OMG it's Rina!

As you probably already know, we are huge fans of SCANDAL at the Japanator office. The Osaka based all female band have been tearing up Japan since coming together back in 2006. They've come a far way from their days performing on the streets! They've recently released their amazing new album Hello World, and are currently touring North America.

We had a chance to talk to the gals, during their hectic schedule and get to know them a little bit better! SCANDAL is Haruna Ono on lead vocals and guitar, Mami Sasazaki on lead guitar and back-up vocals, Tomomi Ogawa on bass and lead vocals, and Rina Suzuki on the drums as well as keyboard and vocals.

Japanator - Fans in the United States are very excited about the upcoming tour. Are there any major differences between Japanese and Western fans?

Rina - Although we go to different countries to perform every year, this is the first time for us to go around the world as part of a world tour. We are really glad we can take the music of our new album to so many countries. The major difference I think is that western fans are really energetic. Let's have fun together!!!

Japanator - What is your favorite song to play?

Haruna - Doll is my favorite song to play because this song is our debut song and also holds a lot of memories for us. Plus it has a powerful sound and makes our concerts more exciting.

Japanator - What is your favorite video game and anime?

Mami - I love Anime and Manga! I've been reading "Attack on Titan" recently. I think it is really wonderful for Japanese culture to be loved by a lot of people from all over the world regardless borders. Some of our fans probably found us out through anime and I think that is great!

Japanator -Favorite Japanese food and why?

Tomomi - Miso Soup! It makes me feel relaxed and comfortable.

Japanator -Favorite Western food and why?

Rina - Hamburger steak! I often cook it myself at home. The flavor of hamburger steaks can change depending on the restaurant or the person who cooks it. The best part is that it can be made into something casual or eaten formally.

Japanator - What do you think about the increasing global interest in Japanese rock music? Is it something you appreciate as it brings you more fans, or does it increase the pressure?

Rina - There have been a lot of girl bands that have been covering our songs, which means the Japanese girl band scene is gaining popularity and that is very exciting. All four of us want to keep creating music as SCANDAL for a long time!

Japanator - Why is the CD market still so potent in Japan, but has been largely replaced with digital downloading in other parts of the world?

Rina - I think people want to keep CDs as something tangible and add to their collections. Although both physical and digital have good aspects, I personally like CDs and I don’t want them to completely disappear. It’s a good thing that we have many more platforms to listen to music and I think people should enjoy it the way they like.

Japanator - Are there any movies or other bands, you are looking forward to seeing this year?

Rina - I watched the movie Whiplash recently. It was amazing. The story is about a jazz drummer and an extremely strict teacher. It was a great film that won three Academy Awards, so I would recommend everyone to watch the movie!

Japanator - Can you give a message for your U.S fans?

Tomomi - Thank you for always supporting us! We will bring an amazing show to you all, so please look forward to the concert! Let's make it an exciting show together!!!

You can pick up Hello World over at iTunes or your favorite music store, and catch SCANDAL on tour. They will be in Chicago this weekend on May 15th at Anime Central, also making stops in California next week. The band will head to Mexico and Hong Kong as well. Definitely a band you do not want to miss!
