Japanator Original: VAMPS interview

If you don't know who VAMPS are, you really should, at least if you are a fan of Japanese music (but especially rock and visual kei). Formed by HYDE of L'Arc~en~Ciel fame and K.A.Z from Oblivion Dust, these J-rockers will be blowing up a stage at this year's New York Anime Fest (and in fact, we are giving away tickets).

We thought it might be a fun opportunity to ask them a few questions since they will be performing for an American audience soon. To check out their answers to our questions, hit the jump!

Japanator: How would you describe VAMPS to people who have never heard your music?

K.A.Z: VAMPS is a rock band that freely expresses sounds from heavy rock to mellow tunes.

Japanator: Why was it important for you to start VAMPS instead of working together on “HYDE” solo work?

I’m too lazy to do promotion by myself.

Japanator: That's honest of you, HYDE! Now, VAMPS music involves many themes related to vampires.  With so many movies, TV shows, and books about vampires, do you feel close to any one of them?

I like Anne Rice’s works.
K.A.Z: Queen of the Damned.

Japanator: After so much time spent together, do you feel it is still possible to surprise each other creatively?  How about while composing/recording “BEAST”?

HYDE: I think we did rather well this time. Both of us managed to create good pieces in a short period. I think we have had luck, and also we have strong artist mindsets.

K. A.Z: Yes, of course! It should be possible! Each of us composed songs, then brought them for the recording. Every one of the tracks is good.

Japanator: Where do you each find your inspiration for song writing?

HYDE: From my experience of live performance , and from my imagination.

K. A.Z: I strum my guitar so that I get inspiration from its tones. This is how I compose music.

Japanator: Touring for so many months at a time, do you ever lose your motivation?  How do you keep yourself motivated being away from your home for such long periods of time?

HYDE: I do enjoy our tour, so I don’t lose my motivation.

K. A.Z: My motivation remains same as I love live shows, but I pay attention to staying fit, as we are in a long tour.

Japanator: Maybe it does not surprise you to know that some fans are taking long flights and spending lots of money to go to one of your World Tour performances, but do you have any message specifically for those fans?

You always give me energy. Thank you. But I am worried about fans' wallets … are they alright..?

HYDE: I truly appreciate it. Maybe I’d better kiss you all. I’m just joking...
