Japanator's Spring '10 preview, part 3

0

We're back from our little respite with another edition of our Spring 2010 anime season guide. We've got six shows on our slate this time around, with some of the titles that are most up in the air (in my mind) in this batch.

On the list this time are: Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Maou, Ikkitousen: Xtreme Xecutors, Kaichou wa Maid-sama, K-ON!!, Kiss x Sis and Mayoi Neko Overrun.

Check out part 1 and part 2 to see what you might have missed.

Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Maou
Studio: Artland (Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino, Tytania)
Director: Takashi Watanabe (Ikkitousen, Ogenki Clinic Adventures)
Air Date: April 2, 2010

See our fist-pumping protagonist there? He's going to become the greatest wizard in the country. On his first day at Magic School, of course, he gets his fortune told. The result? "Demon King."

Pretty badass, isn't it?

So now he's got to live up to his predicted title, all while dealing with the harem of girls that he's coming into conflict with. Since it's coming from the director of Ikkitousen, I'm not expecting anything on the level of high-art here.

No one's got this on their slate, but we'll see what happens.

Ikkitousen: Xtreme Xecutors
Studio: TNK (School Days, UFO Maiden Ultra Valkyrie)
Director: Koichi Ohata (Burst Angel, Ikkitousen: Dragon Destiny)
Air Date: March 26, 2010

Tits. And swords. And more tits. Really, there's not much more to this show -- at least not that I can readily identify.

Since there's an abundance of breasts in the show, know that Tim Sheehy will be "watching" it with great vigor.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama
Studio: J.C. Staff (Nodame Cantabile, Toradora!)
Director:
Hiroaki Sakurai (Kodocha!, Cromartie High School)
Air Date: April 1, 2010

Here we have one of the less than original plots: the president of the student council works at a maid cafe, and a pretty boy finds out the girl's double life. Of course, he doesn't tell anybody, and hasn't started extorting her, so he has his own strange motives here.

Spoiler: He likes her.

Or so I'm guessing. Looking at the lineup, though, I'm figuring the show is going to be good, fun fare and that Sakurai will prove to be a strong director on the title. Brad Rice will be covering the title, not surprising due to a maid fetish.

K-On!!
Studio: Kyoto Animation (Lucky Star, K-ON!)
Director: Naoko Yamada (K-ON!)
Air Date: April 6, 2010

The greatest show of the last decade is getting a sequel. All I can say is: life is good.

Expect Jon Snyder to be covering this. Don't expect him to be wearing pants.

Kiss x Sis
Studio: Feel (Futakoi Alternative, Kanamemo)
Director: Munenori Nawa (Kiss x Sis OVA, Otoboku)
Air Date: April 5, 2010

A guy, with two hot sisters thanks to his dad re-marrying, has to fend off the girls as they fight to sleep with him. Boobs, boobs and more boobs. Oh, and the parents? They're all for this incest. After all, they're not blood-related, says dad.

The show will likely be toned down from its OVA version, but I'm sure it'll pick up the flag Ladies vs. Butlers! left behind now that the show is over. As of right now, nobody's covering the show, but I'll admit it: I'm going to be watching it.

Mayoi Neko Overrun!
Studio: AIC (Nyan Koi!, Cosmos Pink Shock)
Director: Tomohiro Matsu (series creator)
Air Date: April 6, 2010

Shamelessly stealing from ANN: The story revolves around Takumi Tsuzuki, a boy who lives with his older "sister" Otome, although the two have no blood ties between them. Otome manages a run-down confectionary store called Stray Cats. One day, Otome picks up a mysterious beautiful girl off the streets.

Catgirls, what looks like a tsundere, and some delicious fang action. This one is without a doubt up in the air, especially considering this is a first-time director -- someone who doesn't have any experience in animation -- and the quality of the story. No one's got this on their plate right now, but we'll see.
