Kickstarter alert: learn Japanese from a video game

0

Want to learn some Japanese?

I've wanted to learn how to be passable in Japanese for many years now. Not only because of my job but also because I've always thought it would be cool to learn another language and really, what better language to pick than the one that I spend a good chunk of my week listening to anyway thanks to anime?

Unfortunately every method I've ever tried to learn from has failed. I managed to teach myself hiragana and katakana from a website but once I hit sentence structure, grammar and kanji my brain said 'sayonara' and left me in the dust. Now I hear of a brand new Kickstarter which is attempting to combine my personal goal of wanting to learn Japanese with something that I occasionally enjoy dabbling in, Japanese style RPGs.

Now, this isn't the first time that someone has attempted to mix these two elements but it appears to be one of the more ambitious attempts at the method that we've come across lately. Titled simply Koe, this game attempts to teach basic Japanese to players by immersing them in a JRPG that comes complete with experience, quests, random battles, bosses and more. As it is described on the official Kickstarter project page...

Essentially, what I want to do in the game is give you an introduction to the Japanese language within the game itself. I know people who are interested in this style of gaming, as well as Anime and Manga, and who have wanted to learn Japanese because of it, but have no idea where they should start. So why not a fully-fledged story-driven JRPG that gives you a nice start with the language itself?

The person running the campaign wants to raise £35,000 and is currently just shy of halfway towards the goal with 31 days to go (as of this writing). If successful he plans to include 3D character and environments, professional music, voice acting from native Japanese speakers and much more with an estimated release date of June 2015 which seems like a long time to wait but since the project head is essentially working on this mostly on his own it seems a little more reasonable.

So if you're one of the many people out there who wants to learn Japanese but haven't found a method that works for you I suggest you head over to this Kickstarter page and consider backing it.
