Licensing GET: Viz grabs the 2011 Ultraman manga

It's time to witness Viz's special transformation!

It looks like Viz Media's tapping into their toku side, as they've licensed the Ultraman manga that's written and drawn by Linebarrels of Iron's Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi. Honestly, I'm still very surprised with this news, since it's not too often that a company picks up a manga that's based off of a tokusatsu franchise. Who knows, perhaps Crunchyroll's Ultraman-related streams influenced the company to grab this title.

Unlike the Ultraman tokusatsu, the manga's main hero, Shinjiro Hayata, was born with his powers, instead of merging with an Ultra Warrior. The reason behind his abilities was because he inherited the "Ultraman Factor" from his father, Shin Hayata (a.k.a. the original Ultraman's former host).

Aside from being born with special skills, Shinjiro's uses a suit to become Ultraman, which is a different take on the franchise's format. While I haven't read the manga yet, it's great to see more mangas that are based off tokusatsu heading West. If anything, it might be a sign that we could see more titles of this genre crossing the pond soon.

Anyway, Ultraman 2011 hits North America on Aug. 18, which means that we won't have to wait for a long time to read this title. Since Shinjiro's Ultraman suit looks cool, I might give the story a shot as well. Until then, I might take advantage of this time frame to get myself more acquainted with the franchise-- outside of Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends.
