Manga Reborn Kickstarter adds Satonaka Michiko title

The Old Testament, shoujo-style?

I already let you know about the Manga Reborn Kickstarter, which seeks to make a bunch of lesser-known manga legally available in English. Normally, the fact that the Kickstarter has added another title to the project wouldn't necessarily qualify as news, but this is interesting: the 11th title Manga Reborn seeks to translate is The Old Testament by Satonaka Machiko, one of the godmothers of manga. In case you have any doubt that Satonaka is the real deal, please note that she won the Kodansha Amateur Manga Prize in 1964; she was the first one to ever receive it.

Honestly, I wasn't familiar with her work before hearing about the Manga Reborn announcement-- I need to bone up on my manga history-- but she's a prolific artist with an incredible body of work, and it's a shame that her books are largely unavailable in English. I'm kind of interested in seeing her take on the first five books of the Bible, but even if I weren't interested in The Old Testament, I'd support this in the hope of seeing more of her work translated. This artist should be better known; Googling her name mostly brought up picks of Satonaka Chie from Persona 4, who is cool and all, but that's beside the point.

The project is already funded, but you still have a few days to get in on the action if you want to get some neat goodies, like downloads for all the translated manga. There's even a limited-edition print by Satonaka if you want something really classy, but that's going to set you back $450.
