Meet Shaheen, Tekken's first Saudi character

Say "Salam!"

Bandai Namco are revving up the hype machine for Tekken 7, and with their latest character reveal, we finally get our first glimpse at what came of that call for feedback Chief Developer Katsuhiro Harada made in August. Back then he and the team sought info from fans in the Middle East and others familiar with regional culture regarding a new character for the game.

As you can see above and in the gallery, that character is Shaheen, a Saudi Arabian fighter. Judging by the look of the original concept art from August, the core design hasn't changed all that much. The key point is Shaheen's traditional red-and-white keffiyeh headdress, accented by falcon-wing-like half-cloak. His loose shirt-pants-and-scimitar ensemble bears ornate patterns and pointed shoes that call to mind more theatrical "Arabian Nights-style" costuming.

It's worth pointing out that one Middle-Eastern commentator on our story last year noted that Shaheen's fashion sense seemed more at home in the United Arab Emirates (Saudi Arabia's more liberal eastern neighbor). For my two cents, if Shaheen did wear more traditional, flowing Saudi dress, he might be inconvenienced with all the loin-girding he'd have to do before a fight. Visually, at least, he certainly seems less divisive than Lucky Chloe. Now it's up to the story.
