Meet the Manholers: Fans of Japanese Manhole cover art

Manhole Masterpiece

Just when you thought the "Japan is so wacky" thing is overplayed and nothing will surprise you because the internet lets you see everything in Japan, we learn about art in the most unlikely places: Manhole covers! If the title hasn't given it away, Japanese manhole cover art is a real thing and has a lot of people that love the art.

Fans of the artform refer to themselves as "Manholers", and this video from Only in Japan (the folks who showed us the Japanese vending machine restaurant) shows us some of the impressive art on these hard metal discs that blend in with the streets. The video below goes into the many variations of the locally-influenced manhole cover art from many Japanese places as well as a short look into the process of making each cover.

I've heard of this a while ago from an episode of Garo, but I didn't think it was of this magnitude of a curiosity. Consider me very interested and will probably look into these unlikely street art in a future trip to Japan. Check out the video below!
