Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution is filler madness

Now featuring Mecha-Naruto

We missed this trailer a couple of days ago, but now that it's here, I have to say that this is kind of nuts: Bandai Namco has followed through on their obvious intention to turn the Ultimate Ninja Storm series into the anime equivalent of yearly franchises like Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed, by revealing this year's entry Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

As seems to be the case with yearly franchises, the changes they're adding mainly amount to a roster update with a few new modes and tweaks. The Edo Kage have been added to the roster, and a new four-player multiplayer mode, World Tournament Battle, seems to be the centerpiece.

And for the story, I'm at least glad they're putting in more of an effort than the last off-year release, Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations. The whole "Hey let's put together a ninja tournament to determine who's the best ninja" premise for Revolutions is pure filler madness, complete with adding people to the lineup who've been long dead or are currently enemies. And then there's Mecha-Naruto, whose special trailer is below, gussied up to look like an old-time Japanese Kaiju movie trailer.

Man, seeing the Nine-Tails as a mecha tribute to Mazinger Z is almost worth the price of admission alone.
