Netflix joins the fray, streaming Knights of Sidonia

Summer 2014, all regions, dubs!

Netflix is licensing and localizing anime, joining the list of companies doing "simulcast" with Knights of Sidonia. Today Netflix tweeted that they are going to have exclusive streaming rights for the Spring 2014 show. It will be available in Summer 2014, after the series is done broadcasting in Japan. What's more, an English dub will be available, along with a subtitled option. Other language regions that Netflix is operating in will get also their own dubs.

The move feels big--it's a big company doing anime streaming, internationally, and exclusively. It does make sense in light of Netflix's growing ambition to provide its own content to its users. While the format Netflix is doing it with will probably ruffle some feathers (and stretch the definition of simulcast), for those of us who sometimes marathon shows, this all-at-once style might be suitable, assuming that is indeed what happens comes Summer 2014. The anime-3DCG adaptation of the Knights of Sidonia might even be one of those shows best enjoyed when watched all at once.

At the same time this move also raises some questions. How will Netflix handle home video sales in this case? Does any of this has to do with the recent move from the Chernin Group? I guess we will find out. Meanwhile those of you who read the manga (available in English) can let us know if this is even worth watching!
