Baseball, bowling, Wushu on the list

The International Olympic committee (IOC) announced that it has narrowed down the list of proposed sports to be added to the 2020 Olympic Games, held in Tokyo.

The Tokyo 2020 Additional Event Programme Panel was tasked with looking into sports that are not currently in the Olympic program and evaluating if they would be worthy of adding for the games. After review, it has narrowed down its list to Baseball/Softball, Bowling, Roller Sports, Sports Climbing, Squash, surfing, Karate, and Wushu.

Other sports that applied but ultimately did not make the cut were: air sports, American football, bowls, bridge, chess, dance sport, floorball, flying disc, korfball, netball, orienteering, polo, racquetball, sumo, tug of war, underwater sports, waterski and wakeboard.

At this point, the panel will work with the international federations that govern the sports still being considered to hammer out presentation and execution of the events during the games.

Looking over the list of sports not in the running, I see some interesting applicants.

The International Olympic committee (IOC) announced today that it has narrowed down the list of proposed sports to be added to the 2020 Olympic Games, held in Tokyo.
The Tokyo 2020 Additional Event Programme Panel's short list of recognized International Federations that they will work with for the perspective events represent the following sports: Baseball/Softball, Bowling, Roller Sports, Sport Climbing, Squash, surfing, karate, and Wushu.
Other sports that applied but ultimately did not make the cut were: air sports, American football, bowls, bridge, chess, dance sport, floorball, flying disc, korfball, netball, orienteering, polo, racquetball, sumo, tug of war, underwater sports, waterski and wakeboard.
Looking over the list of sports that are still in the running and those that are not I can see some interesting applicants. Personally I don't think Bridge and Chess really are Olympic level sports, being board games. Waterski and air sports are apparatus sports (much like auto racing) and while I'm sure it takes great skill, it's the equipment more than the athlete that makes the performance and not really in the mold of the Olympic spirit. Orienteering and Underwater sports were both in the Olympics at one point but are not very fan friendly, thus they were cut the first time. The one that really disappoints me is Suno being cut. You would think Sumo would have its best chance in Tokyo, but that didn't seem to be the case.
Of the sports going on, Baseball/Softball seems to be a favorite since they are very popular in Japan. Karate and Wushu might face the challenge of having both TaeKwonDo and Judo already being events. I'm not really sure what "Roller Sports" would actually entail. Roller Hockey? Short and long track racing? I don't have an answer. As for Sport climbing, if it's not The Wall from American Gladiators, it won't be as fun to watch.
A proposal for which of these events will be included in the games will be made in September while the final decision will be made in August of 2016.

As for Sport climbing, if it's not The Wall from American Gladiators, it won't be as fun to watch.
