NHK World to cover Sumo in English!

Now us gaijin can join the fun!

NHK World has announced that they will carry English language coverage of top league sumo wrestling on their channel and online.The show, Grand Sumo Highlights will air several times a day on NHK World, and also will be available on the NHK World On Demand  Youtube channel.

The coverage will start with next week tournament in Nagoya and will run the 15 days of the action. The matches will be called by Hiroshi Morita, who has a lot of experience calling the sport.

In preparation for the English language meeting the sport of push and shove, NHK World provided a bit of a primer thanks to their Doki Doki! World TV program.

NHK World is the internationally distributed version of the Japanese NHK public broadcasting channel. Starting its broadcasts to North America in 1995. The channel, as well as its online youtube channel, provides news a life features from the country of Japan. Programs can be subtitled, dubbed, or English language (or a combination of all three), so we in the English speaking world can join in and follow along.

The Sumo Coverage begins July 11th and runs every day of the tournament. You can see it on NHK World On Demand. In the meantime, check out the other videos on the network by looking at their Youtube Playlists.
