NIS sheds some light on their next Vita game

You'll never guess the name. Or pronounce it.

htoL #NiQ: Hotaru no Nikki was announced to be Nippon Ichi Software's next Vita title, as was revealed in Dengeki PlayStation. Only to be available in Japan at this time, it's a downloadable title with a very limited run of a special retail box that comes with a OST, artbook, and other bonuses.

The game has you control a firefly in the darkness, guiding a girl named Mion through the dangerous landscape. It will play around with light and dark mechanics, and utilize the Vita's touch inputs. Masayuki Furuya, the director and character designer, described Hotaru no Nikki as a “die and remember” type of game, which makes me wonder if death is intrinsically tied to the narrative as well as the gameplay.

The description reminds me a lot of Dokuro, a charming downloadable puzzle platformer for the Vita that has you lead a Princess through a trap-laden castle. It's cool to see small-form creative projects like this come from established Japanese studios, and I'd like to see more like it in the future. I'm excited to see a new IP come from NIS, widely known for the Disgaea series, and I hope there are plans to release it stateside.

But for now, all we can do is speculate on what the hell htoL #NiQ stands for.
