Oh, glorious time killer: Japanese bug fights

Remember that great episode of Samurai Champloo when Mugen, in yet another, let's say, creative attempt to earn money, trains a stag beetle to fight other stag beetles in Sumo Bug Battles?

Well, it seems that the Japanese bug duel-fest has stood the test of time. The website Japanese Bug Fights! (the exclamation point means it's craaaazy) currently has 30, yes 30 entertaining arthropod altercations for your viewing pleasure. It's not just a certain bug fighting the same type of bug, either. A whole assortment of creepy-crawlers take the stage and try to best their opponents. I must admit, it's pretty entertaining stuff. While writing this piece, I got totally sidetrack and ended up watching pretty much all the matches. I simply lost track of where I was, but not who I was. In fact, that particular side of me seemed to become more fleshed out with each fight I viewed.

See, I've always been fascinated with insects. Especially as a kid. They're just so damn...weird.

We can all relate to weird, can't we?
