Princess Nine to return to DVD in April 2014

A League of their own...wait, actually it's the same league

Princess Nine is one of those rare anime series where I've never, ever heard a bad word about it. I haven't seen it, but I remember people waxing poetic around 2001 (back when the now-defunct ADV Films originally released the series in the west) that P9 was the show they were really enjoying while DVDs of hyped, bigger-budget shows sat virtually unwatched. Given the passionate fan following this 1998 TV series clearly has, I'm not at all surprised that Lucky Penny Entertainment is releasing the series in a full 26-episode DVD collection next year.

To be honest, despite the good word of mouth I still wasn't sold on the series, since sports anime can be hit-or-miss with me, and this is a baseball show. However, Right Stuf has it up for preorder for $23.99 and that's, um...cheaper than dirt. Seriously, I think there are literally bags of dirt that cost more than that. Add to the super-reasonable price the fact that this collection will include not only all the extras that ADV included back in the day, but also brand-new extras never before seen in North America, including staff interviews, and this is clearly a pretty great deal.

Apparently the story is about a team of female baseball players who want to win the national high school (boys) baseball championship, and must contend with prejudice and sexism as well as the opposing teams as they make their way to the top. This is intriguing, since let's face it; Japan doesn't have the best reputation in the world when it comes to calling out sexism, and this series is fifteen years old no less. I hope it isn't all a one-note "Sexism is wrong, grrr!" sort of narrative, but with the series reputation, I assume there's more going on here.

The Litebox-style DVD set will be available on April 1, 2014. It will include an English dub as well as the original Japanese audio, clean opening and closing credits, player stats, something called "Oden Cooking Special" (the mind boggles), "A History of Basebally in Japan, profiles of the voice actresses, karaoke, a Japanese cover art gallery, a Warsaw Philharmonic video (what?), and err, even more stuff-- seriously, there's a lot on these discs. I'm definitely going to be snapping this up in the spring, and I hope I'm in good company.
