Production I.G. to adapt Sugiura's Sarasuberi

Studio to team with Colorful's Keichi Hara

Last week Production I.G. announced plans to team with Colorful's Keiichi Hara for an upcoming animated feature. The film will be an adaption of the acclaimed 80s' historical manga Sarusuberi from the late Hinako Sugiura who passed back in 2005. Titled Miss Houkusai, the film is set in the Edo period, and centers around an artist and his incredibly talented daughter who lives within his shadow. The film is scheduled to hit Japanese theaters sometime in 2015.

As far as adaptations go, this will certainly make for a decent challenge. It's been said Sugiura's art incorporated many elements of traditional ukiyo-e techniques. With that in mind, it'll be interesting to see how well the manga translates on screen, though I have little doubt they'll do it the justice it deserves. Given that the original manga ran for four years, they at least have plenty of material to sift through. We'll likely hear more about this project in the coming months.
