PSA: Crunchyroll now streams at 1080p!

One of the most common refrains I read from otaku in their opposition to using legal simulcasts as an alternative to (technically illegal) fansubs is that simulcasts' broadcast quality is low. I can understand that.

A lot of folks (particularly tech-savvy anime-watchers) have access to sweet bandwidth, and want to watch the latest SHAFT visual extravaganza in as many "p's" as possible. Ten-hundred eighty of them, ideally. They call that "Eych-Dee".

Well, now it seems that premier stream provider Crunchyroll has removed that particular obstacle, as they now offer quite a few of their shows...IN TEN-HUNDRED EIGHTY P'S! And that in addition to the fact that many of their existing streams were available in seven hundred twenty p's, the far more popular "Eych-Dee" option.

Better still, one of the shows on offer in the most p's is this season's heavy-hitter Nisemonogatari, as well as popular (but not nearly as visually savory) series like Bleach, Naruto, and others. Check out this page for a large list.

Given that streaming can and should be much more important to the future of the anime industry, it's good to see anything happen to it that will improve its chances to prevent fans from resorting to "thievery" to get their fix. Naturally, the option still won't be for everyone (particularly those with less access to speedy internets), and some will forever find excuses avoid paying for things, but the more attractive the legal option, the better.
