Puzzle & Dragons heads to arcades...a second time

Saving Japanese arcades, 100 yen at a time

I think we're all at least somewhat aware of how widely spread Puzzle & Dragons fever is in Japan, but I think their latest project is definitely a good indicator of its success. We've known since last year that Square Enix were developing an arcade game called Puzzle & Dragons Battle Tournament, which looks to bring some fierce competition along with it. That arcade machine is due to launch this Spring. That's right, it hasn't even released yet and we're already hearing of a second!

So what's up with this second machine? Well, first of all, it looks like you'll be getting some physical merchandise with this one! Like many other Japanese arcade machines, this one will net you a monster card for your 100 yen, which you can then scan into the main game. It'll be a nice little money earner, that's for sure, because you're going to want to collect all of those cards, right? Make a few of them shiny and hard to find, then you're on to a winner!

Interestingly, that's not all there is to it. In the picture below, you'll see that a portion of the game cards is being torn off. This is an option you'll have when feeding the machine the cards you want to use, as doing so will allow you to use a one-off special ability. Using one will tear off the ability part of the card, meaning it won't be possible to use it another time. Pretty neat, right? Don't worry, you can still use your cards as monsters even after this happens. In fact, it reminds me of Risk Legacy, in a 'destroy your property' kind of way.

Expect to see Puzzle & Dragons Z: Tamer Battle in Japanese arcades this summer. You know what? I think I'll be checking it out when I'm in Tokyo later this year. Hit me up for trades!
