Read Viz Manga on your Kindle

Go paperless with 160+ series

Like reading manga on your Kindle? If your response is "what manga?," I feel your pain, but the e-reader manga drought ends today. Viz Media has just announced that its entire digital manga catalog is now available for Kindle, effective immediately. That means Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Bakuman, Toriko and a whole slew of other titles are now available for the world's favorite ereader. Over 1,500 volumes of manga can now be purchased and downloaded to your Kindle Fire, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Red Velvet Cake, and whatever other kind of Kindles they make these days. I have an old Kindle and I don't understand these newfangled thingies.

Checking out the list of titles at Amazon, there's a variety of price points, but most of the popular series seem to be priced at $5.59, with some of the more obscure ones costing between $8 and $10. This may seem like a Captain Obvious statement, but I'm so glad that Viz made the Kindle versions cheaper than their print counterparts; one of the things that bugs me about ebooks is that they so often cost just as much as buying the physical book, which just seems wrong. I really hope they offer some kind of bulk discount for the likes of One Piece and Naruto though. These shonen epics are longer than Proust's In Search of Lost Time.

I'm pleased that this announcement means that more people will be reading some great manga, but personally I'm a bit conflicted. I like owning actual books, but my apartment is already overflowing with them and it would make a lot of sense to switch to Kindle. Maybe I should only buy physical copies for titles that have particularly beautiful releases? Or is every manga beautiful in its own way? Manga fans, let me know if you're going through a similar existential crisis here.
