The Gundam We Saw That Day

[Update: GundamInfo posted a recap video of the show's press conference, which can be watched below]

Now this is what I like to call an unexpected turn of events. During the live stream for the next Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans, it turns out that Tatsuyuki Nagai and Mari Okada have been announced as the show's Director and Writer. Honestly, I'm not sure how to feel about this news.

On one hand, Nagai and Okada might hit us with an emotional Gundam title that'll leave us in tears. On the other, the two staff members haven't worked on that many mecha titles. Then again, this sort of scenario could lead to an interesting turn of events since it'll give them the chance to experiment with new ideas.

Seeing that Iron-Blooded Orphans has to do with orphans caught in the war between Mars and the Earth, it seems that Nagai and Okada could focus on the way how the war affects the show's main cast. That or we'll get a romance series that might be a fusion between Macross and the Universal Century Gundam shows. The other scenario could result in it being the second coming of Aldnoah.Zero since the Red Planet is involved in the story.

In regard to the trailer's content, it's neat to see that the show's main character, Mikazuki Augis, is a ripped kid. To an extent, his build reminds me of Daiya from Gaiking Legend of Daiku-Maryu, which is a good thing in my book. From the looks of it, the show's other major player, Oga Itsuki, might act as a role model to help the guy develop into a better person.

As for the show's titular Gundam, Gundam Barbatos, I'm digging the robot's Gundam 00 and Seed Astray-like features. Also, it's neat to see that its starting weapon is a spear. Interestingly, Barbatos was a weapon that as used in a previous war that occurred 300 years before the start of the series, it'll be neat to see how its backstory will affect the Iron-Blooded Orphan's plot. On top of that, the idea behind the mecha being able to use the parts of other machines is a nice sign that we'll get some badass action scenes.

While the show's mobile suits look cool, my views on Iron-Blooded Orphans remains neutral. Since Nagai directed [email protected]: Xenoglossia and Okada wrote nine episodes of Simoun, their brief experience with the mecha genre might help them turn the series into an enjoyable experience. If anything, we'll just have to wait until the 2015 Fall Anime Season to find out since the program airs on Oct. 4. In the meantime, you can check out the title's staff and early artwork in the section below.

To those of you who like Gundam, what are your thoughts on Iron-Blooded Orphans so far?
