Review: Mob Psycho 100 Limited Edition Blu-Ray Set

Mob? Mob? What do you want?

Mob Psycho 100 was in my top 10 series of 2016. While it it didn’t make it on my Top 5 series of 2016 (which it should have now that I have rewatched it) it was definitely a favorite for me during summer time alongside Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara. Honestly, after rewatching it, I would probably replace Keijo! with it. Keijo was a fun watch but Mob Psycho 100 was definitely more entertaining and epic.

Mob Pyscho 100 started as a webmanga by mangaka ONE, which you can tell because it looks very similar to One Punch Man, as well as how powerful the protagonist Shigeo Kageyama is with his psychic powers, though he’s quite different than Saitama. Shigeo is an average middle school boy, nicknamed Mob (or Mobu/モブ which means background character in Japanese) for lacking a sense of presence.

Although he looks wimpy, he is a powerful esper. As he grows older, he realizes that his psychic powers are strengthening and becoming more dangerous. As Shigeo gets more emotional, his power gets out of control and threatens to break through its limits., so he usually lives a stodgy life. He wants to live a normal life just like the others, but he has been encountering a barrage of snags due to helping his master Arataka Reigen with his spirit counsel agency, which consists of getting rid of spirits for their clients. However, Arataka Reigen isn’t really an esper and essentially a con artist that excels in persuasion, speech, and perception.

The anime was great from beginning to end. It kept me entertained through all 12 episodes, with its action-packed episodes and comedy, which is to be expected from the same person who brought up One Punch Man. Most of the characters were very interesting as well and had great interactions among each other, one of my favorites being the relationship between Shigeo and his younger brother, Ritsu. It felt like a natural sibling relationship, especially with the jealousy involved.

Bones was responsible for animating Mob Psycho 100, who are known for classics like Soul Eater, Wolf’s Rain and Ouran High Host Club, as well as the recent sensation My Hero Academia. If you’re familiar with these series, especially the latter, you know Bones excels at what they do, and their talent definitely shows with Mob Psycho 100. Every fight scene, especially the ones where Shigeo lost control of his powers was nothing short of amazing.

I know that this is me being picky, but because English is my second language, I still watch English movies with subtitles since there’s something that will always escape me. I don’t really like that a lot of these releases don’t include English subs that go with their English dub. I know it’s a first-world problem, but I see it as somewhat lazy. That aside, the English dub was good in general, though.

I was able to get the Limited Edition of the set, which comes in a collectible art box with specialty pring and includes double-sided art cards, Dimple wall cling, a metal spoon and character stickers. Definitely, a must have if you’re a fan of the series. I would also recommend the regular edition just because this is a great series, and series like these must be supported. If you have yet to watch it, then do yourself the favor and invest on this, or watch it on Crunchyroll.
