Sentai Filmworks nabs One Week Friends for Distribution

"I have this... condition."

There's no stopping the train of spring acquisitions by Sentai Filmworks, as they nab One Week Friends (Isshukan Friends in Japanese). An anime adaptation of a manga by a fairly new author, Hazuki Maccha's uniquely light and airy art style (with distinctly enormous foreheads) seems to translate well from the anime previews released so far.

One Week Friends has a simple yet interesting premise, as Sentai Filmworks' press release reveals:

It is said that one of the qualities of a true friendship is to understand and be understood. Unfortunately, this can be easier said than done, particularly when it comes to being friends with someone that has no recollection of being your friend the week after befriending them. To become friends over and over, again and again… that is the goal of Yuki Hase when approaching schoolmate Kaori Fujimaya. You see, things aren’t so simple when your memory disappears. And that’s exactly what happens with Kaori – she’s always alone because she can’t commit anything to memory, even if that commitment is as special as a memory of one of her friends. No matter how cherished her memories are, they vanish by the time Monday rolls around. But Yuki won’t give up in the fight for friendship as he embarks on a new mission every week to befriend a person he already knows. In this friendship, everything that’s old is new again in ONE WEEK FRIENDS!

Brains Base will be heading the production, with director Tarou Iwasaki (Sunday Without God, Another) at the helm. The series composition will be handled by Shotari Suga (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, The Eccentric Family), and the art direction by Kira Ito (Bodacious Space Pirates, AKB0048).

With so many well known media examples about unique cases of memory loss like Momento, 50 First Dates, and even Finding Nemo, I've always been attracted to these kinds of dilemmas in fiction because it deals with a unique human condition that has the potential to spin a interesting story. I'll be covering this show when it airs in the upcoming season, and I hope One Week Friends will be a enjoyable watch!
