So THAT's how those stockings stay up!

Ever since experimenting with the thigh-highs-sans-garter-belt look when Faye Valentine was sporting it on Cowboy Bebop, I've been convinced that the look just doesn't work. I'm not saying that it doesn't work stylistically- fifty million anime characters can't be wrong- it just doesn't work physically: the damned things don't stay up. Basically, even though they seem to be relics that only exist for fetishistic purposes by now, garter belts were invented for a reason. Sure, the stockings might stay up for a little while without a belt, but the minute you do any walking, forget it. I've always assumed that the profusion of thigh-high stockings in anime was merely a testament to the fact that animated characters don't need to deal with minor inconveniences like the laws of physics.

However, it turns out that I've been wrong all this time- apparently, the right way to do it (and the Japanese way, but of course!) is to spread sock glue, or 'sock-tachi', all over your legs so that the tights will stick to you literally like glue. So, provided you don't mind the idea of taking a sponge bath in glue, the style is totally realistic, and all those thigh-high clad anime characters aren't breaking any physical laws at all. I'm sorry, anime; I apologize for my doubts.

The thing is, I find it hard to imagine some of the more popular thigh-high sporting characters actually bothering to do something as silly as glue up their legs for fashion. Sure, Chu-Bra!'s Kiyono Amahara (pictured above) might do that (in fact, she probably lives to do that), but what about the no-nonsense Rin Tohsaka of Fate/Stay Night fame? Can you really picture her putting glue all over herself when she wakes up in the morning? I can just imagine her Father's last words: "Become a great Magus, Rin. And remember to always apply glue to your lower thighs."

Hi, I'm a former newspaper journalist who got tired of having a front row seat to the death of print. There probably could be some interesting story there about a disenchanted reporter moving on ... more + disclosures
