Social networking wars on Japan's 'Net horizon

Evil corpotate entity Facebook Inc. has just announced their intentions to launch a Japanese tentacle of their massive social-networking hentai monster, emphasizing that the site is very safe and awesome and you should totally use it. They're wading into a deep, unfriendly pool of competition, though, thanks largely to Japan's Mixi, which has 14 million loyal users and insane amounts of wealth for its founder, whom we've recently noted as being way younger and less crusty than his fellow zillionaires.

Frankly, I dunno that I see any indications of their particular expertise or reasons for much confidence in such a firmly entrenched market. As the Japan Today comments noted, it could be a handy tool for American expats or Japanese exchange students to keep in touch, but otherwise, what's to induce anyone away from the site they're used to and all their friends are already using? Answer me that, smart guys and your evil poking site!
