Square Enix trademarks Shinra Company

Don't get your hopes up just yet

Square Enix, makers of all things Final Fantasy, have recently registered the Shinra Company. What this means, nobody knows, but it was registered under use for video games. This might mean more spin-offs from the world of Final Fantasy VII, or just an update so Square Enix keeps the name protected. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if we hear something come out from them in the next week or so.

Considering how heavily Square Enix leans on certain titles, this news amuses me more than it probably should. During their Advent Children years, you could make claim that Shinra would've been a better name for Square Enix. Years later, their determination to make the most out of Final Fantasy XIII and the Fabula Nova Crystallis has likely put them in a position where they might have to crack open that old chestnut. While I personally have no interest in yet another game in the Final Fantasy VII world, I'd still like to see a remake. I tried going back to the original and man, giant sections of that game have aged terribly.
