Steam's Anime Weekend sale reveals the depths of our infiltration

'Send the rest', he said

Sony isn't the only place putting the deals out for Golden Week. Steam, that hive of all other things Japanese when it comes to gaming, has just pulled the trigger on its Anime Weekend Sale. Running through Monday May 2nd, the sale offering discounts on more than 250 anime-inspired titles. The discounts range from 15% off to 90% off, and seeing as a goodly number of the games are already fairly inexpensive to begin with, a bargain-hunter with a taste for visual novels, romance games (for guys and girls), or even a few triple-A Japanese-born franchises can get away with a good haul.

Notable titles in the sale include CLANNAD, the Danganronpa games, a handful of Neptunia titles, Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, Tales of Zestiria, some quality shooters like Mushihimesama, and MangaGamer's lesbian ghost romance game Kindred Spirits on the Roof and its Nikola Tesla steampunk adventure Gahkthun the Golden Lightning. The latter two are notable for being released on Steam in uncensored format, so folks looking for some saucy content may want to take the plunge.

All things considered, the real revelation is just how many "anime" titles there are on the service now. Since the Japanese gaming industry discovered digital distribution over the last few years, the recent influx of visual novels, anime games, dating sims and scads of imitators has felt like a videogame version of that heyday of the "anime invasion", when it looked like Japanese cartoons would take over the world. The bubble burst and things retreated to their niches, but it's nice to see that Glorious Nippon hasn't quite abandoned its overseas markets.
