Sugoi Japan wants you to vote for your favorite anime and manga


and light novels and all that

Sugoi Japan is a publisher effort--by rounding up a bunch of the publishers and getting endorsements from some celebrities, maybe Japan can highlight some of the most engaging and popular anime, manga and light/entertainment novels for the rest of the world. The sleek website asks people to vote for their three favorite works in each category between anime, manga, novels and light novels. For starters, Sugoi Japan has an interview posted with director Guillermo del Toro, saying that it indeed is influential. You can read it in English here.

It also asks you to vote, but at the time of this writing the English version of the site doesn't appear to allow for that. If you are okay with poking around in Japanese, however, you have up until some time in December to vote from a list of pre-nominated works. The four categories are manga, anime, light novels (randobe) and novels (entame shousetsu), and you get to choose from 50 each. After voting your top 3, you can leave a note for each and fill in your email to get that vote in the ballot box.

Having given all four lists a look, I have to say it's a rather decent collection, if limited to just modern works. Those looking for anything from before the year 2000 might be disappointed, but it makes sense for Sugoi Japan to limit themselves, if the purpose is to bring awareness to a bunch of commercially viable titles to the rest of the world. I'm just surprised how many of the 50 anime titles I've actually watched, and by the same token, how many of the light novels titles got an adaptation into anime...
