Super Smash Brothers' new fighters inspire Japanese nerds

Wii Fit Lady pegged as tourney scene fave

One of the things I love most about otaku culture is how quickly its most creative elements can jump on a fun bit of news. And there was little news that was more fun than the roster update for Nintendo's upcoming Super Smash Brothers fighter on the 3DS and Wii U.

In case you weren't watching Nintendo's special E3 stream, the Big N dropped three new bombshells on the character roster, namely the Villager from Animal Crossing, Capcom's Mega Man (fresh from his appearance in Street Fighter x Tekken), and....the female trainer from Wii Fit.

Frankly, that is incredible news and is exactly the kind of absurdity I expect of a fanservice fighter like Smash Brothers. And it seems Japanese fans agreed, as art site Pixiv has seen a small deluge of fan art from inspired creators. As expected, the Wii Fit lady has been a particularly popular subject, with pieces showing the new character getting other cast members into shape, celebrating victory, and of course, doing yoga. Not everyone was ecstatic over the news, however, with one artist clearly anticipating a different character when he read the words "Female Trainer".
