Tekken 7's producer is NOT happy about what you think of his idol

0

Great job, internet!

Another day, another teacup-sized tempest. Today's videogame drama is brought to you by Tekken 7, which began its spate of character reveals by leading with a new girl named Lucky Chloe, a blonde, twin-tailed breakdance-fighting idol-type dressed in cat ears and a cat's-paw hoodie. She's one of the several new fighters being added to the latest game in the franchise.

The internet, being what it is, immediately started complaining, mostly about Lucky Chloe's idol styling. They called her unfit for Tekken's rich legacy of restrained and nuanced characters like two giant bears, several androids, a wooden dummy, a kangaroo in boxing gloves, a Digimon, a man who can't stand up, and The Devil.

Chief Developer and outspoken Japanese gaming exec Katsuhiro Harada wasn't having any of it. When asked for an option to delete characters players didn't like in-game, he fought back on Twitter, declaring that Lucky Chloe would be pulled from the American version of Tekken 7 and be an "exclusive to Asia and Europe" - presumably in appreciation of Asian and European enthusiast's refined idol palate. Chloe would be replaced by a "bald muscled skinhead", just the way Americans like 'em.

Of course, it's hard to believe Harada is truly serious, but his frustration with detractors is palpable (and rather entertaining). Lucky's hardly a perfect character (for one, Tekken has no shortage of cute, underage girls), but I think anyone would be entitled to act a bit pissy in the face of that kind of hostility. And besides, there are other new characters coming, as well as plenty of older ones, as evinced by the other new trailer below.

In the meantime, intrepid fans have taken to offering alternative characters "friendlier" to western interests. What do you think?
