The Dose: Old School Thursdays

What's life without Char?

Today we go back to the fantastic year of 1991. Full of amazing music, bad sitcoms, and some breath taking anime. I was a huge fan of Gundam growing up, while my fandom never grew to Marcoss levels, I was and am still a fan of the epic conflict between Char Aznable and Amuro Ray.

Soon after the feature film, Gundam: Char's Counter Attack, I didn't quite know what to think anymore. While I was obviously drawn to the fantastic mecha design and mobile suits, the show was all about Char and Amuro. So, when Gundam: F91 was released I approached it with a fair amount of hesitation. When the producers were making the film, they decided to approach it with a simplistic story line, small Mobile Suits, and obvious hero versus bad guy roles. While the animation and designs were quite good, I never fell in love with the film, well maybe the scene where a bullet casing crushes someone!

Watching F91 now, I can appreciate it a bit more. The movie stays within the UC universe, and is actually not bad at all. In fact, it should be commended for moving away from the fans' comfort zones. One thing that always stuck with me was the timeless music brought to us by the talented Hiroko Moriguchi.

Now 45, the Fukuoka native has provided themes for quite a few anime, including Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and of course the ending theme to F91, Eternal Wind. You can find quite a few live performances of her on Youtube, but the one I've included really showcases her incredible vocal talents. I'll say it every week, "They just don't make em like they used to." Do you guys have any old school favorites you'd like to see get some love on The Dose?
