The Dose: Old School Thursdays

Keep your eyes on this one

It's time again for another edition of your favorite weekly flashback, Old School Thursdays. This week, I'm going to bring back a classic I posted a few years ago, but I'm sure no one is going to complain to my boss... I hope. I was flipping through my collection last night on random, and just couldn't find a song that felt right. Suddenly this week's selection light up my speakers, and I was filled with an immense wave of nostalgia. I think it's important you feel it too.

While Faye Wong is not Japanese, that doesn't make her appearance on Japanator any less appropriate. The Queen of Canto-Pop was actually the first singer out of Hong Kong to really turn me on to modern Chinese music. Gorgeous, quirky, and immensely talented, I just couldn't get enough of her alternative music sensibilities she bought to the 90's music scene. If for some reason you've never seen Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express, I suggest you get on that immediately.

Her vocal contribution to the 1999 Playstation game Final Fantasy VIII, Eyes on Me broke sales records at the time, becoming the highest selling video game CD. The song was the first video game song to win the coveted Japan Gold Disc Award, and held onto the top spot, until Utada Hikaru's track Hikari, which was the theme song to Kingdom Hearts. The Nobuo Uematsu song was originally planned to be released without vocals, however Uematsu wanted to add an international flare and increase the songs emotional power with her amazing voice.

How much people loved Final Fantasy VIII is always up for debate, but it's hard to find any fans of the series that can debate the merits of this amazing track. Paired with the weighty fates of the characters in the game, the combination packs a heavy punch. You see? Somethings are better the second time around.
