Three people arrested for unauthorized sharing of latest Makoto Shinaki film

Sharing is NOT caring

Japan is the country that is really strict with their copyrights, especially in certain segments of their entertainment industry, and they take piracy very seriously when it comes music and anime. Makoto Shinkai's latest film, Your Name., was found to be "shared without permission" by three suspects in Osaka Prefecture who were charged for violating the Copyright Act.

Osaka Prectural Police's Anti-Cybercrime division allege that the three men downloaded and shared a "high quality" copy, usually for industry people use, using a rather generically named file-sharing application named "Share". This computer application, Share, also shares the downloaded files once a file is downloaded onto a computer, turning the downloaders into distributors themselves.

The men confessed to downloading the file for personal use, but the nature of the "Share" application just makes their illegal act even worse. The film premiered in August of 2016 and the illegal downloading occurred between September and October.

Your Name. or Kimi no na wa, is one of the most successful films in Japan, so stealing something so high profile that just came out is a really bad idea, especially in a country that actively prosecutes copyright violators. C'mon, it's already in your native language that you can go and watch at theaters.
